The TIWC Educational Foundation awards scholarships to
post-secondary students in Taiwan
who have outstanding potential for leadership, need
financial help, and sincerely
intend to use their talents for the benefit
of society. Students receive NT$14,000 each
year during their four years of undergraduate
study, provided their academic achievement, personal
development, and financial needs continue.

On
Prior to
TIWCEF'S creation, TIWC had assisted and
encouraged deserving students through its Educational and
Cultural Committee, but in early 1975 it decided to use part of the Club's
funds to set up an independent foundation, with an endowment,
to handle its scholarship program and
provide continuity. TIWCEF was
established in February 1977 as a
tax-free foundation,
approved by the Ministry of Education and
registered with the Taipei
District Court. TIWC turned over an endowment fund of NT$1,500,000
to TIWCEF and stipulated that only the interest be
used for the scholarship grants.
During this period, many legal matters
were settled with the charitable help of Lee and Li
Attorneys,
a leading law firm in Taiwan.

The TIWC Educational Foundation has nine
members. The current TIWC President and First Vice-President are ex-officio
members. The seven other members - three from
TIWC and four from the Taipei
community - each serve for three years. In 1978
TIWCEF awarded the first
scholarships to six freshman students who were selected from
outstanding candidates
nominated by their schools. The
number of annual recipients gradually grew
from six to the present twenty-four. Over one hundred and eighty
six
scholarships have been awarded so far, evenly
divided between men and women,
including one who
is physically handicapped. The fields of
endeavor chosen by these
students vary widely. They include
medicine, engineering, physical sciences,
law, education and social sciences.
