Taipei International Women’s Club was initiated under the patronage of Madame
Chiang Kai-Shek, who was very enthusiastic about its creation. At this time, she
was the wife of the Generalisimo Chiang kai-shek, President of the Republic of
China on Taiwan. She was given the title of Honorary President of TIWC and
remain as the Honorary President until she passed
away on Oct. 23, 2003 at the age of 106 years old.
Excerpts from the letter to Mrs. Livia Yu ( President of TIWC in 1982):
"Thank you for your letter and for sending me the two issues of TIWC’s
'Companion' ...
I read the magazines thoroughly and wish to compliment you and your staff on
this publication. The format is good and the contents are entertaining as well
as interesting. I was pleased to note that the international flavor of the
program of studies you offer emphasizes the purpose of the organization….”
Mdm. Chiank Kai Shek’s response to the invitation to the Gala Dinner from Susan
Milla, (President of TIWC in 1998-99):
Message from the Honorary President.
The Taipei International Women’s Club, established in the early 1950’s is the oldest international women’s organization in Taiwan, ROC. It came into being at a time when the nation was under the threat of invasion and our government was in the throes of all kinds of difficulties. The ladies of the diplomatic corps made a stentorian call to form the international women’s club for the sole purpose of rendering services to society. The club also provided the opportunity for Chinese women to participate in international conferences as well as all TIWC welfare activities.
It is my great honor and privilege to be Honorary President of the TIWC. I recall vividly all the accomplishments of the TIWC in the early days, especially the annual bazaar which raised founds to import medicine for the cure of leprosy victims in Taiwan. The club also fostered close friendship and cooperation between Chinese women and the foreign community.
Time really flies. This year the TIWC will celebrate its 48th anniversary. Although I have lived in the United States for many years and although I missed the pleasure of meeting many members of the club, my heart is always with the TIWC which has meant so much for my country and my people.
May God bless the club and may the club continue to do all the good deeds into the next millennium.
